Circadian Circle
Third and final cover painting for the Grey Tower Trilogy novels, "Circadian Circle." You can find the book here to see how the full cover turned out: amzn.to/2s2Z6qd

I took it easy on myself after the last painting.  I went back to finding some reference I could use first and then came up with the final cover around that reference.  I pushed the pose, changed the costume and and did a lot of other things, but this painting was definitely easier to do than the last one.

The idea behind this cover come quickly too.  The first idea I came up with was pretty much what I did.  I knew that I wanted to go with a golden color scheme.  The word or feeling I was going for was "triumph." Or even "rebirth."

The characters, by no means have a cakewalk in the story but, this is the end of the story and I wanted to assure the audience that things will turn out okay.  However, not without change.  Which is one of the two reasons the woman is wearing a different outfit.  The other reason being that she got her outfit torn to shreds in the last cover.

Again, I need to get across that it was the 1940s, and that there's magic.  Although, this is the last cover of the series. Hopefully, by this time, you know what you're reading and the cover doesn't have to spell all of it out for you.

Dark Rift Cover
Second cover painting for the Grey Tower Trilogy novels, "Dark Rift." You can find the book here to see how the full cover turned out: amzn.to/2sUpuSX

After successfully pulling off the first cover, I was told I needed to get done with the next two covers by June.  I was given the assignment in April.  The first cover took me about a month because I could only work on these covers for an hour a day. I have a storyboard job that gets in the way.

To make things even more difficult on myself, unlike the first cover, where I found the reference ahead of time and used it as a basis for the rough idea of what the cover may look like, I decided to do something different.  I drew what I wanted to draw first and then I found the reference the might match what I wanted. This eventually made it three times more difficult because there was no reference I can simply use straight.  I had to use bits and pieces from tons of different reference.

On top of that, I had ZERO idea what this cover should look like.  I must have draw at least ten different versions of this cover before coming up with this one.  Originally I was going to draw the woman, seemingly being enticed to the "dark side," by a demon.  It's part of the what happens in the story.  Problem was, that when I drew that image, it never looked right.

The cover needed to say these things: Sexy, bad ass female protagonist (who women want to be, and guys would like to be with), in World War 2 but one that has fantasy elements like wizards and magical beasts. Well, the first cover kinda set that up so I had a little bit of leeway with this one.  This book is also the Empire Strikes Back of the story where the bad guys raise hell and "win." Creating a major set back for the good guys.

How do I show all this?

I remembered that a dragon gets introduced in the story. Once I realized that, I abandoned the demon idea, decided to use a dragon instead and show all hell breaking loose.  The cover is red to show that things get dangerous. The woman is all torn up to show that how dangerous, but he attitude is that of someone who's moving forward in spite of what she's been through.

Again, I hope this cover makes audiences curious about the book.  What do you think?

Tower's Alchemist Book Art
First cover painting for the first book in the Grey Tower Trilogy novels, "The Tower's Alchemist." You can find the book here to see how the full cover turned out: amzn.to/2rn1buY

This was the second time I've ever tried anything like this.  By which I mean, creating something that looked somewhat real by gathering together different photo reference and using it to copy from and make a final painting. This was tough for many reasons.  Besides getting over the fear that I wouldn't be able to pull it off, the biggest was finding what I should paint.  The story this is based on is World War 2 where the Allies are using wizards as spies to uncover and stop Nazi supernatural attacks.

The trick was to show the female protagonist on the cover and make her look bad ass and sexy without making her look lewd (to attract women), show she's a wizard, and show that this takes place during WW2 WITHOUT show a swastika. In some countries, swastika's cannot be legally printed on book covers. I think I got the point across.  I hope the cover does the job of making people curious about the book.  Otherwise, the painting may be nice but it fails as a cover.
