Description
First cover painting for the first book in the Grey Tower Trilogy novels, "The Tower's Alchemist." You can find the book here to see how the full cover turned out: amzn.to/2rn1buY
This was the second time I've ever tried anything like this. By which I mean, creating something that looked somewhat real by gathering together different photo reference and using it to copy from and make a final painting. This was tough for many reasons. Besides getting over the fear that I wouldn't be able to pull it off, the biggest was finding what I should paint. The story this is based on is World War 2 where the Allies are using wizards as spies to uncover and stop Nazi supernatural attacks.
The trick was to show the female protagonist on the cover and make her look bad ass and sexy without making her look lewd (to attract women), show she's a wizard, and show that this takes place during WW2 WITHOUT show a swastika. In some countries, swastika's cannot be legally printed on book covers. I think I got the point across. I hope the cover does the job of making people curious about the book. Otherwise, the painting may be nice but it fails as a cover.
